We all know how much Google is obsessed with website speed. Not just Google, we all are. Every webmaster wishes that his website speed is faster; every internet user would like the pages to load faster and not have to wait a minute for the buffer to finish. Those are the exact same reasons why Google launched an Apache 2.2 open source service called mod_pagespeed.

This is a new version of the old pagespeed Google offered, but this is in fact a new open source code, not just a new version. The old pagespeed was used to give webmasters insight into their website’s speed and notifications on what needs to be changed in order to achieve maximum speed of their website. What the mod_pagespeed is for is something else wordpress speed optimisation service.

Mod_pagespeed is not an analytics add-on like pagespeed, this is a standalone open source code that is installed on the Apache 2.2 servers and its function is to optimize the page speed on its own, totally automatically. This is great news; the new open source published by Google will allow any webmaster running their websites on the standard Apache servers to install the code and enjoy the benefits of speed optimized websites. And according to Google mod_pagespeed will be able to increase the speed of the site up to three times, depending on the previous speed optimization that site has undergone.

The downside to this is that it only applies to webmasters running their websites on dedicated servers and VPS servers, regular shared hosting bloggers and small website owners will have to wait until major hosting companies install mod_pagespeed on their hosting servers. One of the hosting companies that already announced the install of this open source code is GoDaddy and we can expect other major Hosting companies to join in very soon.
